Amanda Myers at A special kind of class
I am so excited to be part of the product swap put on by Mrs. Stanford's Class. I had the pleasure of reviewing Karla's Polka Dot Classroom Themed Materials. Karla's teaches a self-contained class of K to 5 students. Her blog Life in Special Education is full of tips and tricks for working with students with special needs. [image: Life In Special Education] Here is some of the things I printed out from Karla's Polka Dot Classroom Themed Materials. I can't wait to put them up in my room. We don't go back until September 4th so I'm getting a head start on my preparations. Ther... more »

Whether you're still enjoying summertime, on vacation, prepping for back to school or have already gone BACK TO SCHOOL like some Students and Teachers in Oklahoma, you're should read this. Study Shows Autistic Teens Develop Friendships by Focusing on Strengths
Landon Bryce at - 2 hours ago

When people ask me how autistic people can learn to make friends, my answer is always to become involved in activities that focus around special interests. Researchers led Robert Koegel at UC Santa Barbara created interest-based clubs that allowed autistic boys to develop strong friendships: Koegel offered the example of a student with ASD who has a keen interest in computer graphics. The team created a graphic design club in which students would design logos for various companies and businesses. Because most of the students lacked the necessary expertise, they depended on their ... more

Bullying of Children With Disabilities - Postscript I

[image: English: Official portrait of Justice Potter S...] English: Official portrait of Justice Potter Stewart. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) At the recent excellent conference at Seattle University, I was lucky enough to present a half-day session on Bullying and IDEA. The participants were very engaged in the presentation. We began with the definition of bullying, and we found that the definition of bullying is much like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's infamous response when he was asked to define obscenity and he replied that he was not sure if he could define it, but he ... more »

New research sheds light on some possible reasons why experiments to pay or reward students for good test scores have been yielding lackluster results.

transition - what's required vs. what's expected

'Enjoying The Hi-5s of Autism - A Family Experience' at 'Enjoying The Hi-5's of Autism - A Family Experience'
When the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was reauthorized in 2004 the U. S. Department of Education through the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) required states to develop State Performance Plans based on 20 indicators. The data would be submitted annually, by each State, in Annual Performance Reports. The 13th Indicator, or Indicator 13, relates to transition services for students. The National Technical Assistance and Dissemination Center (NSTTAC) which is funded by OSEP helps States achieve compliance with indicator 13 and have put together a checkl... more »

Why Prenatal Testing for Autism Scares Me

Landon Bryce at
*Warning:* This starts out with ideas that are hard to think about, and gets harder. Brutally honest, even for me, but the only way I can say things that need to be said. Two stories in today's news have me worried about the issue of prenatal testing and autism. 1. A blood test which is claimed to identify Downs syndrome 95% of the time has been approved for sale in Switzerland, despite the objections raised at the European Court of Human Rights by the international federation of Down's syndrome organizations: The federation, grouping 30 associations in 16 countries, said in Ju... more »
